Is the £300 pensioner payment automatic?
Each winter, millions of pensioners across the UK receive up to £300 to help cover their heating costs. But many still wonder — do you need to apply for it, or does it arrive automatically?
Here’s everything you need to know about how the Winter Fuel Payment works, when it’s automatic, and what to do if you haven’t received yours.
🔹 1. The Short Answer: Yes, It’s Automatic for Most Pensioners
For the vast majority of people, the £300 payment is automatic.
If you receive the State Pension or another qualifying benefit, you’ll get the payment automatically from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
You do not need to apply or take any action.
The money is usually deposited between November and December, directly into your bank or building society account — the same one where you receive your pension.
Before payment, you’ll get a letter from DWP confirming:
- The amount you’ll receive (£200 or £300 depending on your age);
- Which account it will be paid into;
- The expected payment window.
🔹 2. Who Gets It Automatically
You’ll get the Winter Fuel Payment automatically if, during the qualifying week (15–21 September 2025), you:
- Were born before 22 September 1959;
- Lived in the UK; and
- Were receiving one or more of the following benefits:
✅ State Pension
✅ Pension Credit
✅ Attendance Allowance
✅ Carer’s Allowance
✅ Income Support
✅ Employment and Support Allowance (income-related)
✅ Jobseeker’s Allowance (income-based)
If you meet these conditions, DWP will pay you automatically — no claim required.
🔹 3. How the Payment Works
The Winter Fuel Payment for winter 2025–26 includes a £300 top-up for older pensioners (those aged 80 or above).
Here’s what to expect:
| Age Group | Amount | Payment Method |
|---|---|---|
| Under 80 | £200 | Automatic bank deposit |
| 80 or over | £300 | Automatic bank deposit |
Payments are made once per winter, not monthly. The credit will appear as “DWP Winter Fuel Payment” on your statement.
🔹 4. When You’ll Need to Make a Claim
In some cases, you’ll need to apply manually using the WFP1 claim form (available on GOV.UK) if:
- You don’t receive the State Pension or any qualifying benefits;
- You’ve never received a Winter Fuel Payment before;
- You deferred your State Pension;
- You live abroad but in a qualifying country (EEA or Switzerland).
📅 Claim window
You can claim from 15 September 2025 until 31 March 2026.

🔹 5. The £35,000 Income Rule: What Changed in 2025
Starting in 2025, all pensioners who meet the age and residency rules will receive the payment automatically, but there’s a new income-related condition:
- Those with taxable income below £35,000 keep the payment in full.
- Those earning above £35,000 will still receive it automatically, but HMRC will reclaim the amount later via the tax system.
This means the payment remains automatic for everyone — but its net effect depends on your income level.
🔹 6. If You Haven’t Received the Payment
If your payment hasn’t arrived by 28 January 2026, follow these steps:
- Check your bank statement for “DWP Winter Fuel Payment”.
- Look for your confirmation letter (sent in October or November).
- Call the Winter Fuel Payment Centre if you received neither the letter nor payment.
You’ll need to provide your National Insurance number and bank details.
🔹 7. How to Avoid Scams
The DWP will never ask for your bank details by text, email, or phone call.
All official payments are handled automatically — you don’t need to “reapply” online or confirm any details through links.
