How to claim the State Pension
Reaching State Pension age is a major milestone — but your pension won’t start automatically.
You must claim it yourself to begin receiving payments.
This guide explains how to claim your State Pension in the United Kingdom, including when to apply, what you’ll need, and the options available for UK residents and those living abroad.
📅 When You Can Claim
You can claim your State Pension as soon as you reach your State Pension age.
To find out your exact date, use the official calculator:
About two months before you reach that age, you should receive a letter from the Pension Service explaining how to make your claim.
If you haven’t received it by then, don’t worry — you can still claim online, by phone, or by post.
💻 How to Claim Online
The quickest and easiest way is to claim online through the GOV.UK service.
You’ll need:
- A Government Gateway account (you can create one during the process)
- Your National Insurance number
- Bank or building society details (for payments)
- Proof of identity (such as your passport or driving licence)
To apply:
👉 Visit www.gov.uk/claim-state-pension-online
After submitting, you’ll receive a confirmation reference and your first payment usually arrives within five weeks after your pension start date.
☎️ How to Claim by Phone
If you prefer or need help, you can claim your State Pension by phone.
📞 State Pension claim line (UK):
- Telephone: 0800 731 7898
- Textphone: 0800 731 7339
- Relay UK: 18001 then 0800 731 7898
- From abroad: +44 191 218 7777
Lines are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.
When you call, an agent will help complete your application over the phone and send you confirmation by post.
📮 How to Claim by Post
If you prefer paper forms, you can claim by post using form BR1 (State Pension claim form).
You can:
- Download it directly: BR1 form (PDF)
- Or request it by calling the Pension Service.
Send the completed form to the address listed inside — the processing time can take up to 6 weeks depending on volume.
🌍 Claiming from Outside the UK
If you live abroad, your claim process is slightly different.
Contact the International Pension Centre (IPC):
📞 +44 (0)191 218 7777
✉️ www.gov.uk/international-pension-centre
You can usually claim from up to four months before reaching State Pension age.
Payments can be made into a foreign bank account (in local currency or sterling) — depending on the country.
If you live in a country with a social security agreement (e.g., EU, USA, Canada, Australia), your pension will increase each year under the same triple lock rules.
💷 After You Claim — How Payments Work
Once approved, your State Pension is:
- Paid every four weeks directly into your chosen account
- Paid in arrears (covering the previous four weeks)
- Taxable (but no tax is deducted at source)
You can choose to receive it weekly if you claim certain benefits like Pension Credit or Income Support.
💡 Tip: Always use an account in your name or a joint account where you’re named holder. Payments cannot go into someone else’s account.
🧾 Documents and Details You’ll Need
Before you apply, have these ready:

- If claiming from abroad: your international tax ID, bank SWIFT/BIC, and country of residence
These details help avoid delays or errors during processing.
