Who qualifies for the £300 payment for pensioners?

Each winter, millions of pensioners across the UK receive help with their heating bills through the Winter Fuel Payment.

For 2025–26, this support includes an amount of up to £300 — a key benefit designed to protect older people from rising energy costs.

But who exactly qualifies for this payment, and how do you know if you’re eligible? Here’s everything you need to know.

🔹 1. The Age Requirement

To qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment, you must have been born before 22 September 1959.

This date is based on the qualifying week, which for winter 2025–26 runs from 15 to 21 September 2025.
If you reach the qualifying age after this week, you’ll become eligible in the following year.

Those aged 80 or over automatically qualify for the full £300, while those under 80 receive £200.

🔹 2. Residency Requirement

You must have lived in the UK for at least one day during the qualifying week (15–21 September 2025).

This includes residents of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, though each nation administers payments slightly differently:

  • England and Wales: Managed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
  • Scotland: Paid through Social Security Scotland under the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment scheme.
  • Northern Ireland: Handled by the Department for Communities (DfC).

If you were temporarily abroad during that week, you might still qualify. However, long-term residents outside the EEA or Switzerland are not eligible.

🔹 3. The Income Rule: £35,000 Threshold

In 2025, the government introduced a new rule linking eligibility to taxable income.

  • Pensioners with an annual taxable income below £35,000 will keep the payment in full.
  • Those with an income above £35,000 will still receive it automatically, but HMRC will reclaim the amount later via the tax system (through PAYE or Self-Assessment).

This adjustment ensures that the support remains available to everyone while targeting additional help towards those who need it most.

🔹 4. Automatic Eligibility

You’ll receive the Winter Fuel Payment automatically if, during the qualifying week, you:

✅ Were born before 22 September 1959, and
✅ Lived in the UK, and
✅ Received one or more of the following:

  • State Pension
  • Pension Credit
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Employment and Support Allowance (income-related)
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance (income-based)

If you meet these conditions, you’ll receive your payment automatically — usually between November and December.
No application is needed.

🔹 5. Who Needs to Claim Manually

Some pensioners must submit a claim using the WFP1 form, available on GOV.UK.

You’ll need to claim if:

  • You don’t receive the State Pension or any of the qualifying benefits;
  • You’ve never received the Winter Fuel Payment before;
  • You deferred your State Pension;
  • You live abroad in an eligible country (EEA or Switzerland).

📅 Claiming Period:

  • Open: 15 September 2025
  • Deadline: 31 March 2026

🔹 6. Special Cases and Exceptions

Certain situations can affect whether you receive the full amount:

  • 🏥 Hospital stays: If you’ve been in hospital for over 52 weeks receiving free NHS care, you may not qualify.
  • 🏠 Care homes: If you live in a care home and receive Pension Credit, Income Support, or income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, your payment may be reduced.
  • 🌍 Living abroad: You can only claim from abroad if you have a genuine UK link — for example, having worked or paid National Insurance in the UK.
  • 👥 Couples: If you live with another eligible pensioner, the payment is shared per household, not doubled.

🔹 7. When You’ll Be Paid

Payments are usually made between November and December 2025.

Before that, you’ll receive a letter from DWP confirming how much you’ll get and which account it will go to.

If you haven’t received your payment by 28 January 2026, contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre to report it.
